Palenque “Pauahtun”
Governor’s Palace, Palenque
Also known as God “N”s,
the Maya pauahtuns are beings who are said to hold up the 4 corners of the
World. They are generally depicted as aged and wrinkled but when shown with
waterlillies are young men. They almost always wear a net headband and are
often accompanied by conch or turtle shells or wear a turtle carapace.
This pauahtun is one of four that are on the legs of the throne found in the
Governor’s Palace in Palenque.
